It might be in the 90s this week, but it is officially fall in the Magic City! There’s plenty of trick or treat events and fall festivals happening this month, and I’ve got you covered on info about pumpkin patches and corn mazes in the area (scroll to the bottom of the post). There’s no shortage of things happening in Birmingham this month, so go ahead and pull out your phone to plan your social calendar!
This Week
- A Night of Georgia Music (October 2)
- Location: Lyric Theatre
- Time: 8 p.m.
- Cost: $37.50+
- Hear Mike Mills (R.E.M.’s bassist), Robert McDuffie, and Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones’ keyboardist) playing Georgia music (either songs about Georgia or music by Georgia natives). They’ll be playing songs by The Mills Concerto, James Brown, Ray Charles, Outkast, R.E.M., Gladys Knight, The Allman Brothers Band, Otis Redding, Brook Benton, Gram Parsons, and more.
- Greek Festival (October 3-5)
- Location: 307 19th St. S.
- Time: 10:30 a.m. – 10 p.m.
- My favorite food festival of the year, and probably Birmingham’s oldest one, considering this is their 45th year. Be sure to check out their desserts (Greek donuts and baklava!), and if you’re unsure of what to order, my fave is the pasticho (macaroni, ground beef, Greek tomato sauce, covered with a layer of béchamel). Click here to view this year’s menu. You can also tour the church, which is both beautiful and historical and worth your time.
- Art Crawl (October 3)
- Location: The Pizitz
- Time: 5 – 9 p.m.
- This monthly rain or shine event brings together local makers and allows the public to view and purchase their wares. Plus, you can eat dinner at the yummy Pizitz Food Hall while you’re there.
- Antiques in the Gardens (October 4-6)
- Location: Birmingham Botanical Gardens
- Time:
- Friday & Saturday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Sunday: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
- Cost: $15
- Come to the Gardens to peruse the antiques gathered from across the U.S. as well, to attend workshops, and to meet regionally and nationally known architects, interior designers, and landscape designers. This is Birmingham’s premier antique show, so if antiques are your thing, you won’t want to miss this event. This year, designer Markham Roberts and gardeners Renny Reynolds and Jack Staub be presenting lectures.
- Art After Five (October 4)
- Location: Birmingham Museum of Art
- Time: 5 – 9 p.m.
- On the 1st Friday of the month (Sept. – April), the BMA features a blend of art and entertainment. Since Halloween is drawing near, this month will feature a screening of the Halloween class Hocus Pocus. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their best witch-themed costume for a costume cost. Also, you can enjoy spell-casting and tasty specialty cocktails, and hair stylists from Forecast Salon will show off some frighteningly fantastic hair inspired by Hocus Pocus.
- Party on the Porch (October 4)

- This week marks the grand opening of Birmingham’s REI store. Each day, the first 250 people (ages 18+) in the store will receive a limited-edition Nalgene water bottle with a promotional gift card inside.
