Hot dogs with a twist. If you haven’t tried Hot Diggity Dogs down in Avondale, that’s my quick description for you.
Sure they do your more mainstream chili and kraut dog (The Motherload), and they give you the option to “Build Your Own Dog.” But I recommend branching out to try some of their more inventive dogs. My personal fave is the Winky Dink Dog with pimento cheese, mustard, and onion (hold the onion). It’s got a little heat to it, but it is tasty and filling.
If you’re wanting more of an Asian flare, go with the Sayonara Dog (surimi salad, pickled ginger, seaweed relish) or the Emperor Gochujang (Gochujang slaw, pickled onion, and Korean BBQ sauce). You can also go north of the border with the Oh Canadog! (fries, cheese, gravy, and onion) or south of the border with the Diablo Dog (jalapeno, bacon, cheese, and tortilla strips). Go crazy with the Waimea Dog (spam, pineapple relish, sriracha mayo), or be a true local and stick with the Birmingham Dog (mustard, onion, kraut, and sauce).
When I order at a new place, I always like to ask the folks who work there what they prefer, and for a side, the lady at the register recommended the tots, which is a strong choice. However, they also have fries, pork skins, and even poutine available. If you want to go healthy (at a hot dog place?), Hot Diggity Dog also serves a Goat Cheese, Apple, and Onion Salad. Prices range from $4-$6 per dog, $1 for sides, $6 for poutine, and $6 for salad.
Located above Fancy’s on 5th, seating inside is minimal, but if it’s a pretty day, get your food to go and take it across the street to Avondale Park. Also, be prepared to parallel park on the street and to walk a block or two, especially if you go during the lunch rush. And know that they’re closed on Mondays but open from 11:00am-10:00pm the rest of the week, except for Sunday (open from 5pm-midnight).
